Variety of Courses

As an ancient Scottish university, St Andrews is dedicated to providing its students with a broadly based education that encourages them to experiment intellectually before specialising.

  • The modular system at St Andrews allows students to tailor a degree that suit them.
  • St Andrews offer a four-year Honours degree program different from the English system, studies choose a faculty in which to study out of Arts, Divinity, Medicine and Science.
  • Students are part of a faculty rather than a specific degree program, offering breadth and flexibility to students who can change subjects over the first two years before choosing a degree path.
  • There are a number of opportunities for students to spend a full academic year studying in the USA or Canada as part of their degree programme.
  • Students are mainly taught through a series of lectures given by subject specialists, as well as this teaching takes place through tutorials, seminars, reading, laboratory work, field work and computer assisted learning.

Location

The University of St Andrews is integrated into the mediaeval coastal town of St Andrews and contrasts beautiful historical building with world-class facilities. The town and the campus merge into one, making a thriving, close-knit community in which a third of the population are connected with the University.

A wide range of university residences are spread throughout the town that all differ in appearance and atmosphere; ranging from beautiful stone buildings to modern apartments. The main University library is a contemporary building consisting of four floors and is easily accessed from all departments and residences due to its central location. As well as this a modern sports centre and playing fields are located close to the student halls of residence.

St Andrews is located on the east coast of Scotland, just North of Edinburgh. It is surrounded by wooded hills of the Fife countryside and the Fife coast. The historical layout and buildings of St Andrews remains untouched and the main shopping areas are located on two principal streets. The city is internationally renowned as the ‘home of golf’ with golf having been played in St Andrew since 1400 AD. The city currently has six 18-hole courses and one nine-hole course. St Andrews provides a stunning mediaeval setting for students to live and study and students and they soon feel part of the small and diverse community.
