Adelphi is one of the most selective private institutions on Long Island, admitting only 70 percent of the freshman application pool. Currently, Adelphi enrolls 8,333 students from 40 states and 49 foreign countries.

Adelphi's Garden City campus, established in 1929, has five buildings designed by the renowned architectural firm of McKim, Meade & White, and two buildings designed by the internationally-celebrated architect Richard Neutra. In 2002, the Garden City campus became a registered arboretum. In 2006, the new Fine Arts and Facilities Building opened on the south end of campus, providing state-of-the-art studio and exhibition space for the visual arts. Adelphi's new recreation and sports complex and performing arts center are slated for completion in 2008, which will again transform the appearance of the campus.

Among Adelphi's 94,919 alumni are three of Long Island's state senators, two members of Congress, the Mayor of Hempstead, the former chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, the current president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a former president of Allstate Insurance, a co-founder of Nextel Communications, CEO of Omnicom, and the former White House physician to President Clinton.
