Despite an overall population of over 500,000 the city retains a very welcoming feel and a large number of students choose to remain living in the city after they graduate.

There is a lively music and comedy scene in the city with several large music venues. The city also boasts the largest theatre complex outside of London along with plenty of award winning galleries and museums. With two high level football clubs (including the official oldest football club in the world) and many excellent sport facilities, Sheffield has been awarded the title of the first National City of Sport. For those who like to shop there are plenty of opportunities to do so. The city centre hosts many famous high street stores and the Meadowhall Shopping Centre is one of the largest in Europe with over 270 shops. For those who prefer independent stores the Devonshire Quarter has plenty to offer.

Sheffield is also a very green city with 200 woodlands, parks and gardens within its borders, including the Victorian Botanical gardens and the modern Winter Gardens, one of the largest temperate greenhouses in the UK. Not only this but 1/3 of the city lies within the Peak District National Park, an area of beautiful countryside that is the perfect location for outdoor sports such as mountain biking, climbing and caving, and attracts droves of tourists each year.
