Other focus areas include comprehensive English as a Second Language (ESL) and a University Preparation Program (UPP).

The High School is located on the campus of Vancouver Island University (VIU), an internationally respected public post-secondary institution that has hosted international students from over 75 countries in the last 40 years.

The High School prepares students from around the world for entry into Vancouver Island University and other North American universities. Graduates of VIU High School are guaranteed admission to Vancouver Island University programs on satisfactory completion of course requirements. Students receive assistance in planning post-secondary admissions to university and actually have an opportunity to take university courses. Students appreciate the care and attention of a small high school with all the advantages of a university.

VIU High School offers 4 terms a year, and students can start the academic program on any one of four entry dates. (September, November, February, April) Class size averages 14 students. In addition, a Summer Program is offered in July and August for students seeking a short-term program of study in Canada. All teachers are certified by the Government of British Columbia. A focused learning environment encourages academic excellence to give students a firm foundation for achieving their future educational and career goals.

The High School seeks to instill in students personal qualities of leadership, diligence and self-reliance and helps them to develop inter-cultural communication skills and attitudes to become world citizens and to develop friendships in a multicultural setting.

The co-curricular program provides an amazing experience in Global Leadership. VIU High School is part of a unique learning community in Canada. Although VIUHS is a private high school, it shares facilities, resources and instruction with Vancouver Island University, a public university of 10,000 students on the Nanaimo Campus. It also involves students from the high school in the university community and encourages university involvement in the high school.
