University of Otago was founded in 1869 and is New Zealand’s oldest university.

The main campus is in Dunedin, a city of culture and learning in scenic southern New Zealand (population 121,000). The city and environs provide excellent outdoor recreation and field-study opportunities. Dunedin is the gateway to the scenic southern South Island, including the Catlins and resorts towns of Wanaka and Queenstown.

Otago is a university with a national presence, having Schools of Medicine and Health Sciences in both Christchurch and Wellington.


All international students studying at undergraduate level will be at the Dunedin campus. A small number of postgraduate students may be able to study at the Christchurch or Wellington campuses, typically for research programmes.


Otago is also New Zealand’s top-ranked university for research quality (PBRF Quality Evaluation 2006)


In the 2011 QS ranking of world universities Otago was placed 130th in the world. Otago recorded the highest score of any New Zealand university for citations per faculty. Otago was ranked in the top 50 in the world for the subjects areas of Psychology, Sociology and Law, and ranked in the top 100 in the world for the following subject areas: English Language and Literature, Modern Languages, History, Philosophy, Geography and Area Studies, Medicine, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences
