Research Quality

Swansea’s research-led and practice-driven teaching fosters a culture of inquisitiveness and imagination, and helps to ensure that the University’s degrees are relevant to the modern world.

  • Studying in a research-led university, students are taught by talented researchers. Ambitions are fuelled and careers forged by the enthusiasm of lecturers who have achieved international success.
  • Swansea is well ranked in 36th position in the UK for overall research quality. Two areas are ranked in the Top 5 in the country: Civil Engineering ranks very high in 2nd place and General Engineering ranks well in 5th place in the UK. A further two areas are in the Top 30: Computer Science ranks 21st and Law ranks 25th.
  • Swansea enjoyed great success in the RAE. Nearly half (47.5%) of Swansea’s research was rated as world-leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*) (RAE 2008) – with the largest increase in internationally excellent research in the whole of the UK.
  • A phenomenal 27 out of 31 academic areas have world-leading research which has a real impact on the health, wealth, culture and well-being of society.
  • An inspiring 90% of academic staff are research-active. (RAE 2008)
  • In 2009/10 Swansea attracted research grants totalling £65 million in support of its research activity.
  • Swansea University is the only Welsh university to be a member of the exclusive Texas-UK collaborative, an elite international research group that seeks to transform medical research.
  • Notably, Swansea is ranked first in Wales for research quality in 17 research subjects.

 

An international experience

Swansea University is proud that its international outlook drives the excellence in its academic teaching and research.

  • Swansea has links with more than 100 partner universities from around the world, from Europe, Asia and Australasia to North and South America.
  • Swansea University’s International Development Office has scholarships available up to £3,000. The scholarships are open to all subject areas.
  • Swansea offers a full-time, year-round English language programme for students who need to improve their language skills before starting their studies; an English for University Studies programme and free academic English support classes for all enrolled full-time international students
  • For international students Swansea offers an International Foundation Programme - a pathway to a degree. International students who do not yet have the necessary academic qualifications can study at the campus-based International College Wales Swansea (ICWS) which offers an alternative route to a Swansea University degree. Successful completion of the ICWS stage of study guarantees progression to further studies at the University.

  • Swansea won the first ever Times Higher Education Award the UK’s Best Student Experience.
  • It is a winner of the UK’s Best Mosque Provision Award from the Federation of Islamic Students.

  • Swansea has an excellent employability record. 91% of Swansea graduates are in full-time employment or further study within six months of graduating.

Variety of Courses

  • The University is structured into six Colleges covering the full range of academic areas available at Swansea. Each College encompasses broadly-related subjects, courses and research centres, and each has a strong commitment to maintaining a high standard of teaching and student support.
  • The six Colleges are: College of Business, Economics & Law, College of Engineering, College of Human & Health Sciences, College of Arts & Humanities, College of Medicine, College of Science.
  • Swansea offers over 650 courses at Foundation, Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

 

Location

Swansea University is in the city of Swansea, South Wales - in the Principality of Wales - on the western side of the UK. The Campus is situated amidst 46 acres of rolling parkland of Singleton Park and Singleton Botanical Gardens, on the majestic three-mile sweep of Swansea Bay, enjoying a fantastic beachfront location and within easy reach of the bustling city of Swansea. Swansea’s campus lifestyle fosters a welcoming, cosmopolitan community that offers something for everyone. Swansea is a very safe, friendly, inexpensive and cosmopolitan city. A vibrant student city it offers a wide range of social, cultural and sporting facilities, including a spectacular waterfront marina, museum complex and sports stadium.

Swansea’s city centre contains all the shopping, leisure and entertainment facilities you would expect of a major modern city. The latest development is a £30 million retail project, promising even more choice for shopping. New landmark developments such as the £70 million meridian quay development, home to Wales’s tallest building, give the place a sense of purpose and vision, whilst the stunning scenery of the surrounding area means that students will be studying in one of the UK’s most beautiful locations.

Swansea is on the doorstep of the Gower Peninsula, a coastal national park that has 19 miles of dramatic and picturesque coastline - a showcase of spectacular, clean award-winning beaches - offering some of the UK’s best swimming and surfing.

Cardiff the capital of Wales is only 50 minutes away and the Brecon Beacons National Park is only 45 minutes away. London, the UK capital, is only three hours away with direct trains running hourly.
